Heartland announces 17% reduction in GHG emissions for FY2020

Heartland is a proud member of the Climate Leaders Coalition, working with other Kiwi organisations to limit global warming within 2°C of pre-industrial levels. In March this year, Heartland formulated and published our GHG emissions reduction targets, which go a step further than what is outlined in the Paris Agreement, aiming to keep global temperatures within 1.5°C.

We’re now pleased to announce that our GHG emissions for FY2020 have been finalised and independently audited and represent a significant reduction from the FY2019 baseline. Heartland’s mandatory GHG emissions reported for FY2020 were 955 tCO2e – this is an absolute reduction of 17% from the 1,157 tCO2e reported for FY2019.

This reduction can be attributed to both the early activities in our Emissions Reduction Plan, as well as the inadvertent reduction in travel emissions due to COVID-19. It is estimated that one third (6%) of the reduction is a result of deliberate emissions reduction activity, including changes in the mix of fleet vehicles, a shift from paper documentation to electronic marketing and electronic signatures and the introduction of Certified Renewable Energy to our NZ supply.

This reduction, achieved during a year of strong business growth, puts us on track to reach our target of 35% GHG emissions reduction by FY2026.
